Sorry I missed the show, ’cause I definitely wanted to weigh in on the Nintendo issue. It’s one thing to protect your intellectual property from being stolen and losing money because it’s being given away due to the theft. However, making a Let’s Play video is free advertising for Nintendo and any company that produces video games (EA, Activision-Blizzard, etc.), so it just boggles my mind that Nintendo wants to take the stance of “well, you can freely create these videos, but you’re not going to make any money on them”. They can’t pay enough money in marketing dollars to get the reach of the Let’s Play videos! On more than one occasion, as you guys mentioned during the show, I’ve had a Let’s Play video sway my decision on purchasing a game or not. With game titles easily costing $60 to $70 each, I love to see some actual game play, not produced game play from the game maker, but real people playing the game. There’s nothing worse, to me, than dropping that kind of money only to find out that the game maker only showed us the best parts of the game and the rest of the game sucked. But, that’s just me. 🙂
Donovan Adkisson Great points made man! Since recording of this episode I have looked into this a bit more and it appears that this is a practice that sometimes happens on the youtube side of things where they aproach companies about this sort of thing and they can say yes or no. Notch from Minecraft for instance said a flat no while Nintendo agreed to share the ad revenue. They apparently don’t get it all but they do get a portion of it if my sources are to be believed of course..
